Iceland Diaries: Reykjavik / Western Region

October 8, 2018

A couple of weeks ago, my sister Melissa and I flew out to Iceland for a week-long adventure.  This had been a trip we had dreamt about for years, so it felt absolutely surreal to finally find ourselves there.  Here are some of my favorite photos from our time in Reykjavik/Western Region.

***Photos from our time in the Northern and Southern Regions coming soon***

September 10th

After picking up our rental we pulled over into this rest stop, right off the airport, to take in the view and find the nearest town for us to get some breakfast.  That's how we ended up in the small fishing town of Grinavík.  The town was mostly deserted due to how early it was, only fishermen were out and Café Bryggjan was the only open restaurant or cafe.

After breakfast we made our way to the place that, almost ten years ago, sparked my dream of one day visiting this breathtaking country: The Blue Lagoon.

After over five hours at the lagoon, we called it a day and headed into Reykjavik for the night.

For our first full day in Iceland we decided to explore a bit of downtown Reykjavik before anything else.  The day was rainy and chilly so we layered up and off we went.

Morning treats at Brauð & Co .

After spending most of the morning sightseeing and exploring the downtown area, we went to ROK for lunch. This is where I had the BEST black bean "burger" I have ever had.  Absolutely amazing menu.

After lunch, we commenced our first road trip: The Golden Circle.

Golden Circle— GEYSIR / STROKKUR

Golden Circle— GULLFOSS

Golden Circle— ÞINGVELLIR NATIONAL PARK

This park actually sits in a rift valley caused by the separation of 2 tectonic plates: North America's and Europe's.

We then concluded our adventure with the most magical double rainbow.

Having returned from our roadtrip to the Northern (and much colder) Region just the day before, we were ecstatic to wake up to the sun shining on our first morning back in Reykjavik.  Our bed & breakfast was just a block away from Hallgrimskirkja so we were a short walk away from pretty much everything downtown... so off we went to stuff our faces with more pastries and enjoy our last full day in the city.

(Our last Icelandic "home")

Back at Brauð & Co for more treats.

Reykjavik's performing arts center is truly breathtaking. Sad we weren't able to catch a show while there.

September 17th

Since our flight was not scheduled to leave till 3pm, we decided to go on a morning walk, splurge on brunch and do some last minute shopping.  We had walked past Egill Jacobsen the day before and we both agreed that we couldn't leave Reykjavik before tasting its food (and coffee).

...and just like that, it was time to say good-bye.

This photo was taken from our moving car on our way to the airport... my last photo of Iceland.
